Quicksort came out at a time when Algol 60, whose influence was fundamental on Tony Hoare as it was on many people at the time, had made recursion and exciting new tool. Quicksort provided a natural use of recursion: you can implement a Quicksort procedure by calling Partition on the array two index markers a and b (initially 1 and n), which yields the partitioning line i, then calling Quicksort again on each of the two slices. For decades computer science courses have used descriptions of Quicksort not just as an algorithm but also as an example of why recursion is useful.
